A JOURNEY OF DISCIPLESHIP

VISION FOR LIFE | RULE OF LIFE | INVEST IN LIFE

Do you have a vision for transformation, whereby every aspect of who you are and how you live becomes more loving, whole and Christlike?

Do you long to become more authentically who you are AND to follow jesus in a daily way, cultivating a life of communion with god?

Are you ready to embrace some new things and let go of some old things, in order to have more of Christ and less of you?

Are you ready to act from your deepest longings for God, your deepest desires for genuine transformation and a vision for what Christian living could be?

if so, WELCOME TO ASKESIS

for thousands of years people have been practising discipleship.

it's not new.

we have just forgotten.

we have lost focus.

we have neglected to  intentionally engage in a life of transformation to christlikeness.

ASKESIS

The exercise of rigorous self-discipline, especially mental self-discipline practiced as a means to spiritual growth.

We have become attractional rather than intentional.

we have lost depth.

We must heed the call to become disciples, in order to make disciples.

we must obey the great commandment in order to fulfil the great commission.

Many of us are exhausted from activities and busyness and deeply long for spiritual practices which genuinely unite us with God and bring us to wholeness and maturity.

this is an invitation to the old and the young, the beginner and the expert, the busy and the bored, the thinker and the doer, and the introvert and the extrovert.

learning spiritual practices is not about doing more, replacing your church commitments or going it alone; rather it is embracing a way of living.

The Askesis Experience is a year long journey to help cultivate a way of discipleship through establishing spiritual rhythms and practices.

through 12 monthly conversations we discover how to:

VISION FOR LIFE//

connect with the deep desires you have for god and for your life

"NO-ONE BEGINS A JOURNEY WITHOUT A VISION OF WHERE THEY WANT TO GO"

Man Looking Out the Window

If our desires reveal who we are then one value of attending to them is that it helps us gradually to see our true self behind the masks we wear. At the same time it helps us to become what God desires us to be as expressed in the process of our very creation…our most authentic desires spring ultimately from the deep wells of our being where the longing for God runs freely...

Sheldrake, Befriending Our Desires, 13-14

Many of us have engaged in discipleship practices without holding a vision for why they are important. What do we long for? And what might happen if we listen to those desires and longings? Locating those desires and welcoming a vision for genuine transformation becomes the fuel in the engine of discipleship on the long haul of the Christian journey.

RULE OF LIFE//

develop core spiritual practices that form the basis of your relationship with jesus

"WITHOUT DIRECTION AND INTENTION OUR IDEAS AND DESIRES STAY WITHIN OURSELVES"

In the spiritual life it is actually true that ‘where there’s a will there’s a way.’ This is true because God is involved and makes his help available to those who seek it…people who do not intend to be inwardly transformed will not be. God is not going to pick us up and throw us into transformed kingdom living.

Willard, Renovation of the Heart, 62

Are you willing to make decisions to enter into a transformational process in order to fulfil your deepest longings for God and be faithful to the call of discipleship?

"A LIFE WITH LOCATED DESIRES AND INTENTIONAL PRACTICES CANNOT HELP BUT TRANSFORM THE WORLD AROUND IT"

Forest Suspensionn Bridge

The beauty of contemplative practice is that 'we enter it as individuals, yet emerge enriched and equipped, part of a larger community more capable of serving the needs of a hurting world.

Heuertz, The Sacred Enneagram, 170

HOW DOES LIVING A RULE OF LIFE, A SLOWED DOWN SPIRITUALITY and A MORE INTENTIONAL PRACTICE OF DISCIPLESHIP SHAPE AND IMPACT OUR ENGAGEMENT IN THE WORLD AROUND US? WHAT DOES LOVE CALL FOR US TO DO AND BECOME? WHAT IS GOD'S INVITATION TO US IN EACH AREA OF OUR LIFE?
